Natale in Piazza in Lugano: when the city lights up and rediscovers the pleasure of sharing

Some moments in the year announce themselves without any need to check the calendar, days when autumn is about to give way to winter. The days are shorter and colder and the dark arrives earlier; you feel the need for warmth and for being closer to the people you love. Christmas is in the air: the city begins to change, the first decorations appear, lights take over the streets and squares, shop windows are transformed and catch the eye with light, colour and display.

In Lugano the long wait, Christmas itself and the holidays are celebrated with one of the city’s best-loved events: Natale in Piazza. From 26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, the city will accompany residents and visitors through the whole festive period. The dates for the 2026-2027 edition have already been announced, while the full programme of events has not yet been published.

It will be a Christmas to spend together in the heart of the city. A chance to meet again, to be surprised and to rediscover the value of sharing.

When light changes the face of the city

By day Lugano shows the elegance and restraint of its streets, its squares and the buildings that look onto the centre. Then, towards evening, as the mountains slowly darken, the lake reflects the last of the sun, waiting to mirror the face of the moon. Night falls and the lights come on: the city, the houses climbing the hillsides, the boats that cross the lake tirelessly. Scenes that have always repeated themselves, yet at no time of year do they take on new meaning as they do now. The approach of Christmas does not really change the spaces; it changes the way we look at them.

A street you walk every day becomes a route to rediscover. A square is no longer just somewhere you pass through but a space to linger in, taking in the energy of a day of celebration.

In recent editions of Natale in Piazza, the large tree in Piazza della Riforma has been the symbolic centre of the event, carrying the atmosphere of the holidays out into the city streets. Markets, food chalets and activities for families have helped turn Lugano into a Christmas destination that joins the urban scale to the warmth of the celebration.

The 2026 programme will bring new elements and changes, but what stays the same is the Christmas spirit, the wish to give residents and visitors genuine feelings to share with family or with the people they love.

The time of waiting

In Lugano, as everywhere else, Christmas does not begin on 25 December. It begins much earlier.

It begins when you decorate the house, think of the people you would like to see and choose a gift for them, precious less for what it costs than for the fact that it comes from the heart. At Christmas the waiting is a fundamental part of the experience. It is not a simple succession of days but a time that invites us to arrive ready on 25 December.

This long approach is exactly what Natale in Piazza accompanies.

From the end of November until Epiphany, Lugano becomes a place where waiting turns into meeting, cheerfulness, celebration and shopping.

All of it without setting a destination, taking the city simply, letting yourself be guided by the light of a distant shop window, by music from a square not far off or by the smells coming from a restaurant across the street.

The pleasure of choosing a gift

Christmas is the time of presents, the time to give the people closest to you a tangible sign of your affection. A gift to unwrap between the blinking lights of the tree and the crackle of the fire.

A gift we may not have chosen so much as one that chose us: something unexpected that caught our attention while we were walking through the centre with no particular direction in mind. That is one of the pleasures of the Christmas markets: you can see a thousand things and then, as if by magic, what had been a vague idea for an unusual present suddenly becomes a real object.

Moving through the central streets means looking, comparing, imagining. Every object takes on a personality the moment you start associating it with a person: it becomes a message of love, of friendship, of respect.

In the 2025 edition, the Lugano Christmas market ran between Piazza Manzoni, Via Nassa and Piazza Dante, with more than sixty chalets given over to crafts, food specialities and gift ideas.

The 2026 programme has not been set yet, but the tradition of the markets says a good deal about the bond between Christmas and the city centre. The shopping streets, the boutiques and local businesses become part of a single route, in which the possibilities for choosing the perfect gift become endless.

The warmth of winter

Living Christmas also means finding again the tastes and smells that stand for it best: spices, sweets and traditional dishes. Hot drinks go with a walk through the central streets, and the cold is part of the experience.

In previous editions, the food chalets in Piazza della Riforma have become meeting places to stop at for a winter dish, to warm up and to share a moment with friends, family or colleagues.

Over the holidays, food is not only a matter of satisfying the palate; it becomes memory. A smell can take us back to childhood and to waiting for that one night, to a laid table and relatives arriving from far away, to grandparents who are no longer here. A taste can remind us of a person, a house or a habit we thought we had forgotten.

That is why, at Christmas, the table becomes the place where distances shorten, conversations regain a deeper value and time loses its meaning: the moment is lived fully.

Christmas through the eyes of children

If for an adult Christmas is often tied to the memory of time past, for a child it is the liveliest expression of the present: waiting for something important that is about to happen, impatient for the moment to arrive.

For them the border between reality and imagination simply does not exist. Letting them live in a magical world is every adult’s responsibility and duty, so that joy settles in their children’s hearts. The memory of these Christmas days will warm them for the rest of their lives.

For that reason, recent editions of Natale in Piazza have given families a good deal of space, through villages, games, creative workshops and shows. In 2025, for example, the programme included a Villaggio Family along with various cultural and recreational activities for younger children.

There is no way yet to know which of these will return in the 2026 edition; what does not change is the value of an event that can speak to different generations.

Adults find again the gestures and atmospheres of their own childhood. Children, living fully in the present, build memories that will one day shape their own picture of the holiday.

Christmas belongs to children; the responsibility for keeping the magic alive belongs to adults.

From Christmas to the new year

Natale in Piazza will keep Lugano dressed for the holidays until 6 January 2027. In previous editions, Piazza della Riforma has hosted the New Year’s Eve party, with a toast under the tree and the city’s traditional celebrations on 1 January.

The programme for the passage into 2027 has not been presented yet, but, in line with previous editions, Lugano is certainly the ideal place to close one year and begin another, surrounded by the city’s magical atmosphere and together with the people closest to you.
